Google Ads brand safety guide

Learn how to protect your brand across Google Ads with a framework for identifying risk, reducing wasted spend and scaling governance through automation.

What is brand safety in Google Ads?

Brand safety is the process of ensuring your ads appear in environments that align with your brand, values and business objectives.

For some advertisers, that means preventing ads from appearing alongside harmful, offensive or inappropriate content. For others, it's about avoiding placements that simply don't deliver value - such as children's content, low-quality apps or websites in irrelevant languages.

Closely related is brand suitability. While brand safety focuses on avoiding harmful environments, brand suitability recognises that every advertiser has a different appetite for risk. A gaming company, charity and financial institution may all define "appropriate" inventory differently.

As Google Ads becomes increasingly automated, advertisers have less direct control over where ads appear and more responsibility for ensuring campaigns are governed appropriately.

Why brand safety matters

Brand safety isn't just about protecting reputation. It also has a direct impact on campaign efficiency, governance and long-term performance.

  1. Protect your reputation

    • Consumers increasingly associate the brands they see with the content they're viewing. Appearing next to misleading, offensive or unsuitable content can undermine trust, even if the placement wasn't intentional.

  2. Improve traffic quality

    • Not every impression represents valuable inventory. Poor-quality placements (e.g. made for advertising), irrelevant apps, children's content or websites outside your target language often generate lower-quality traffic and reduce overall campaign efficiency. Keeping ads focused on relevant placements helps improve the quality of visitors reaching your website.

  3. Reallocate wasted spend

    • Every pound spent on an irrelevant placement is budget that could have been better invested. As campaigns expand automatically across more inventory, small inefficiencies can quickly become significant sources of wasted spend.

  4. Build consistent governance

    • Most advertisers don't manage a single Google Ads account. Whether you're an agency overseeing dozens of clients or an in-house team managing multiple brands and markets, maintaining consistent brand safety standards manually becomes increasingly difficult as accounts grow.

Where brand safety risks exist

Google Ads now reaches users across multiple campaign types and inventory sources, each introducing different considerations for advertisers.

  1. YouTube

    1. Video campaigns and Performance Max can serve ads across millions of YouTube videos.

    2. While Google's content suitability controls provide an important foundation, advertisers should regularly review where ads appear and determine whether those placements align with their own brand standards.

    3. Children's content, sensitive topics and low-quality channels are common areas to monitor.

  2. Display

    • The Google Display Network reaches a huge range of websites and mobile apps. This scale creates opportunity, but also introduces risks such as:

      • Low-quality websites

      • Mobile apps generating accidental clicks

      • Websites with limited commercial relevance

    • Regular placement reviews help identify inventory that delivers little value or isn't aligned with your objectives.

  3. Performance Max

    • Performance Max expands reach across Search, Shopping, Display, Discover, Gmail, Maps and YouTube using Google's automation.

    • While this enables greater scale, it also reduces visibility compared with traditional Search campaigns.

    • Advertisers should routinely review placement delivery alongside channel spend changes impacting where your ads are showing.

  4. Demand Gen

    • Demand Gen campaigns are designed to maximise reach across Google's visual inventory.

    • As with other automated campaign types, regular reviews of placements, exclusions and creative performance help maintain consistent brand standards.

  5. Search Partners

    • Search and Performance Max campaigns can serve across Google's Search Partner Network.

    • Although this can increase reach, it's important to understand where traffic is coming from and whether individual Search Partners align with your performance and quality expectations (if you’re not already opting out completely).

Why manual brand safety no longer scales

Many modern Google Ads accounts now contain:

  • Performance Max campaigns expanding automatically

  • Demand Gen campaigns serving across multiple surfaces

  • Millions of potential placements

  • Multiple markets and languages

  • New campaigns launching regularly

So your approach needs to keep pace. Brand safety has become less about periodic audits and more about establishing a repeatable governance process that continuously identifies new risks as campaigns evolve.

Common brand safety mistakes

Many advertisers have brand safety controls in place, but they often rely too heavily on manual processes. Some of the most common challenges include:

  1. Treating brand safety as a one-off project

    • Campaigns evolve constantly. New placements appear every day, making brand safety an ongoing process rather than a single audit.

  2. Relying only on Google's default settings

    • Google provides valuable controls, but every advertiser has different suitability requirements. Reviewing and tailoring those settings helps ensure campaigns align with your own brand standards.

  3. Ignoring traffic quality

    • A placement doesn't have to be harmful to be ineffective. Apps, irrelevant languages or low-quality inventory can quietly consume budget without delivering meaningful business value.

  4. Reviewing placements too infrequently

    • With today's levels of automation, issues can emerge quickly and erode stakeholder and customer trust, or consume significant spend long before the next scheduled review.

How AI is changing brand safety

Artificial intelligence is transforming how advertisers monitor campaign quality.

Rather than manually reviewing thousands of placements, AI can rapidly assess large volumes of inventory and identify patterns that deserve closer attention.

This doesn't remove the need for human oversight.

Instead, it enables teams to spend less time finding potential issues and more time deciding how they should be managed.

The most effective approach combines automated monitoring with human judgement, allowing advertisers to define their own acceptable level of risk while responding much faster as new placements emerge.

Building a scalable brand safety framework

As advertising programmes grow, consistency becomes just as important as individual optimisation.

Google's content suitability settings (found under 'Tools' in the UI) should be the starting point. These are our must have recommendations to apply here:

  1. Sensitive content: We'd generally recommend most brands apply all of these exclusion options

  2. Content labels: Apply 'content not yet labelled' alongside DL-MA (mature) and DL-MA (teen+) where relevant for your brand

  3. Content types: Ensure 'Live streaming videos' are excluded as live streaming videos aren't part of YouTube's brand safety accreditation. Exclude 'parked domains' to only show on active websites.

  4. Content themes: Excluding 'content suitable for families' is also key to ensure your ads aren't appearing on 'Made for kids videos' across YouTube. Apply all other options to prevent appearing alongside sensitive content.

Once in place, a scalable framework should include:

  • Regular placement reviews with centralised exclusion management.

  • Ongoing monitoring of relevance - e.g. languages or app categories.

  • Automated alerts or exclusions for new risks.

  • Periodic governance reviews across every account.

This creates a repeatable process that supports both performance and brand protection without relying entirely on manual reviews.

How Squared.io helps

Brand safety is difficult to manage manually at scale.

Squared.io combines AI-powered placement analysis with automation to help advertisers continuously monitor campaign quality across Google Ads.

Rather than relying solely on periodic placement reviews, teams can automate many of the repetitive governance tasks involved in protecting their brand.

Key capabilities include:

  • AI-powered placement reviews to assess the potential risk of ad placements.

  • Automated placement exclusions based on configurable risk thresholds.

  • Content suitability automation applied consistently across accounts and account groups.

  • Language detection to identify placements serving in languages outside your targeting.

  • Children's content detection to reduce unwanted exposure on videos, websites and apps designed for children.

  • Search Partner visibility to understand where ads are appearing across Google's partner network.

  • Mobile app controls to quickly exclude app categories or all app placements where appropriate.

  • Centralised governance through account, group and global automation, helping teams maintain consistent standards as campaigns grow.

Instead of manually reviewing thousands of placements, Squared.io helps teams focus their time on the issues most likely to affect performance, governance and brand reputation - making brand safety an ongoing process rather than a periodic clean-up.
